This new, revised and updated second edition of A Kayaker’s Guide to Lake Champlain offers 50 different paddling adventures that circumnavigate the entire lake, providing an intimate, cove by cove, island by island exploration of America’s “other great lake.” The routes described are illustrated with full-color maps and photographs and enlivened with essays on the Abenaki and other Native Americans, the pivotal naval battles of Plattsburgh and Valcour Island, lighthouses and shipwrecks, the French & Indian wars, the Revolution, the War of 1812, smugglers, the fascinating geology of this fossil-rich one-time arm of the sea, and up-to-date environmental issues like algal bloom, urban and farm runoff, milfoil, zebra mussels, fish hatcheries, and endangered species. The result is a well-rounded overview of a remarkable natural resource, a book that will be of interest not just to paddlers but to all boaters on the lake, tourists, and residents.

Praise for A Kayaker’s Guide to Lake Champlain:

“Certainly not just a guide for paddlers. This is one of the best all-around, multifaceted orientations to the lake I have ever read, and it will be of benefit to any lake student, boater, shoreline explorer, bird watcher, diver, hiker, or anyone with an interest in gaining a better understanding of this wonderful place we call Lake Champlain.”
Arthur B. Cohn, Director Emeritus, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum

“What a delightful blend of natural history, lore, conservation and expert trip information about kayaking on Lake Champlain! … After just a few pages, you’ll want to head for the lake with your kayak.”
Katie Dolan, kayaker and former Director of The Nature Conservancy in Eastern New York

“Packed with information about Lake Champlain’s scenic islands and shorelines, wildlife habitats, and unique history, this updated book is perfect for any paddler—beginner or experienced. More than just a guide for kayakers, this is an essential book for anyone who loves the lake and its natural treasures.”
Chris Boget, Executive Director, Lake Champlain Land Trust

About the Authors
Margaret Holden worked with nonprofit corporations in a management role and as a consultant, and also helped individuals with choices as a career counselor. She has chaired and participated in a number of nonprofit boards. She lives in the Champlain Islands in the summer and in Hope Town, Bahamas, in the winter, biking, hiking, swimming and, of course, kayaking—in short, anything outdoors. In addition to coauthoring two kayaking guidebooks, Margaret coauthored the Women’s Job Search Handbook.

Catherine Frank is a former long-time Community College of Vermont instructor, computer consultant, and Web site designer. She has been a member and chairperson of numerous nonprofit boards on the local and regional level. A forty-five-plus-year summer resident of the Champlain Islands, she enjoys biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, and paddle boarding. She has hiked the length of Vermont’s Long Trail. Now retired, Catherine is still involved in local bike-pedestrian issues and tries to spend as much time as possible on or near Lake Champlain.

Together Margaret and Catherine have circumnavigated Lake Champlain and coauthored A Paddler’s Guide to the Champlain Valley: Exploring the Rivers, Creeks, Wetlands and Ponds (Black Dome Press, 2015). Margaret's and Catherine’s travels on Lake Champlain have been featured as presentations before numerous organizations, on television, and in the local press. Both women are committed to promoting a heightened awareness of Lake Champlain and its tributaries strengths and challenges.
