THE CATSKILLS IN THE ICE AGE
Third Edition, Revised and Expanded
By Robert Titus and Johanna Titus
Published by Black Dome Press & Purple Mountain Press
Paper, 6″ x 9″, 200 pages, 110 maps and photos
ISBN 9781883789930, $19.95
This book is about perception, about seeing our familiar world in a new light. We can spend a lifetime enjoying the natural beauty of the Catskill Mountains and still be blind to much that is there. But now, guided by two resident science professors, we can embark on a journey through the past for a clearer understanding of the present—as well as the future, for as the authors conclude, “Nothing, absolutely nothing, lasts forever.”
Stand anywhere in the Catskill Mountains and look up into the sky. Let your mind wander back 20,000 years into the past. Try to imagine a half mile of glacier rising above—part of a vast sheet of ice reaching south from Labrador, crushing and grinding mountains and forests in its path as it slowly advances. The enormous weight of the ice pushes down on the surface, scraping and sculpting the mountains we know today. Next, fast-forward your vision thousands of years and witness in your mind’s eye the melting of that ice—raging, foaming, pounding, thundering torrents of water flowing out from the melting ice to form the picturesque cloves and waterfalls of today’s Catskills, creating the landscape that inspired the Hudson River School painters … gifts of the Ice Age.
"In Robert and Johanna Titus’s newest book, The Catskills in the Ice Age, Third Revised Edition, each chapter is an epic voyage. Words flow like glacial meltwaters, picking you up and sweeping you along from page to page, chapter to chapter, transporting you through time back to the ancient Catskills of tens of thousands of years ago and then returning you to the present. Sit back and enjoy the ride or, better yet, carry the book with you as you explore the Catskills and see the familiar landscape as you never have before." — Russell Dunn, author of Catskill Region Waterfall Guide and more than 30 other books exploring the geography of the Northeast
About the Authors
Robert Titus and Johanna Titus are, respectively, retired professors of geology and biology. They are best known in the Catskills as popular science writers. They write for three regional magazines—Kaatskill Life, Upstate Life and Catskill Tri-County Historical Views—and for local newspapers including Woodstock Times and Mountain Eagle. They are the authors of four previous books on Catskills and Hudson Valley geology: The Hudson Valley in the Ice Age (Black Dome Press, 2012); The Catskills: A Geological Guide (3rd edition, 2004); The Catskills in the Ice Age (revised edition, 2003); and The Other Sideof Time: Essays by “The Catskill Geologist” (2007). The Tituses are frequently invited to present PowerPoint lectures on their research and have been featured on television and on radio. They, along with Professor Alex Bartholomew of SUNY New Paltz, do their own regular radio show on WIOX in Roxbury, New York. They have a facebook page (“The Catskill Geologist”), a blog site (“thecatskillgeologist.com”) and can be contacted at randjtitus@prodigy.net.
